Machine Learning – The Effects of Artificial Intelligence(Content Strategi-SEO)

Machine Learning is an area of technology that has helped to improve the quality of service on the web and our smartphones. The term, often used as a synonym for Artificial Intelligence is pretty distinct from AI, yet, connected to it as well.

I could go on to say that the end goal of AI is to create a machine, capable of mimicking the human mind. To achieve this, it needs learning capabilities. That being said, Artificial Intelligence, as an area of computing is pretty broad. It includes reasoning, representation of knowledge and even abstract thinking. On the other hand, Machine learning focuses simply on software that can ‘learn’ from past experiences.

Machines learning from past experiences? Yes, it’s quite possible! Also known as ‘Analytics 3.0’, it’s closely related to statistical analytics and data mining.

Intrigued? Well, read on.

What is Machine Learning?

Earlier in this article, I’d said that machine learning is quite distinct, yet connected  to AI. Let’s expand that statement. Machine Learning is simply the ‘leading-edge’ of Artificial Intelligence. It’s the field of computing that enables computers (aka, machines) to learn from past experiences, be it success or a failure and use that information to predict outcomes for the future.

To understand this further, let us assume that you have to buy a new house.

There is a small house that’s available for $70,000 and a bigger one that costs $160,000. However, you’d like to buy one that’s medium in size.

Using past trends, and something that’s called ‘Linear-Regression’, your computer can successfully predict the cost of the medium sized house you want. The best part of this is that once you buy it, the sample space increases and the computer will be able to predict an even better price in the future.

Simply put-in, machine learning enables a computer to improve its performance, as it learns from what has happened in the past. Another example can be seen in the simple game, Tic-Tac-Toe. Your software evolves and gets more accustomed to your moves, making it harder for you to win. It learns on the go and makes you think more and more.

How does it all work?

Engineers use quite a lot of different techniques to build systems that are capable of learning. As already mentioned, a lot of these ‘techniques’ are related to the mining of data and statistical analysis. Let us consider the following image:

The top-left image is a data-set. This consists of everything that has happened and is of two types –red and blue. As this example is purely hypothetical, these red and blue dots can represent anything, be it petals on a flower or coins and their diameter.

In terms of pattern, or grouping, you can see that the top part of each image is red, whereas the bottom is blue. Towards the middle, there seems to be some sort of a union. Machine Learning uses different algorithms to predict where a new, unseen sample will be placed. All other pictures in that figure are different algorithms, which you needn’t know (Unless you’re an engineer!).

Machine Learning: Use cases

  1. Climate Change Modelling

With the growth in the number of Earth-observing satellites and climate models becoming more powerful, scientists are turning to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to overcome any deluge of data.

To put this ‘data’ into perspective, the UK MET office holds about 45 petabytes of information as of now (Although, I wonder what they use it for, as it’ll probably be raining there!). Machine Learning has led to the growth of climate informatics. This has helped officials develop better climate models and predict accurate changes in weather.

This has further evolved into correct predictions for tropical cyclones, atmospheric rivers, and even weather fronts.

  1. Autonomous Vehicles

Since computers have the ability to continuously learn from experience, discern their surroundings and come to accurate results, more developers are working towards autonomous vehicles.

The number of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) have increased in numbers over the past years. They’re expected to reach a total of 122 million (!) by 2025. These autonomous vehicles use multiple cameras, sensors and radar systems to analyze and adapt to a rapidly changing environment. And with deep learning, they can know the behavior of other vehicles on the road, making for a save mode of transport.

  1. Medical Research

If the availability of a lot of data is key for machine learning, medicine is a gold-mine. Providing the industry with improved efficiency, optimized innovation, and tool creation, over a $100 billion can be generated – annually.

In 2016, IBM and Quest Diagnostics teamed up and announced the IBM Watson Genomics, which aims to integrate genomic tumour sequencing and cognitive computing. Another prime example of  the use of machine learning in medical research is Google’s DeepMind Health.

What machine learning is doing for medical research is simply reaching accurate diagnostics by going through a tonne of data, which can never be studied manually by a physician. Machine learning not only provides speed of diagnostic, but a personalised result report as well.

Machine learning has a lot, lot more use-cases. You can read about Forbes’s top 10 following this link.

Worth all the hassle; and the risk?

Have you ever watched the movie Terminator? Before going further, I have to say that it peaked with Judgment Day. Plus, they shot the heart out of dear ol’ Arnold in that new one…

Anyway, I really do not wish to live in a world that is ruled by machines. As with all things that aim to change the world, there’s a moral component with machine learning and AI. What will happen if Artificial intelligence outstrips our own and someday becomes bigger than humanity? Facebook did shut down it’s AI program after robots started to develop their own language. There will also be times when the decision a machine makes, while as good as it may be, it might not be morally right for us to follow.

The BBC did a wonderful piece on the above, which you may read here.

As for risk assessment, some machine learning strategies can fail up to 90{ed162fdde9fdc472551df9f31f04601345edf7e4eff6ea93114402690d8fa616} of times when applied to a real-life situation. So, is it worth the try, and the risk? At this point of time, I’ll go with a tentative yes. I suppose it’s just a case of ‘we’ll deal with the future when we get there!’

Final note

Machine Learning, unlike many areas of Artificial Intelligence, is not intangible. It is already here and is continuing to improve our services and daily lives. That being said, it is not perfect, nor will it be for the foreseeable future. This is simply because of the fact that not all data we feed the machines are perfect.

Perfection though, is a journey, and as we grow as humans, so will our machines and gadgets. The trust between them and us will grow steadily, and transparency in algorithms may help it develop faster.

And in my humble opinion, this ‘learn-by-doing’ process is pretty good, so we might as well work towards making it even better!

Working Out at Home Isn’t Just Possible, It Might Even Be Better (Rank Princess-SEO)

To be healthy: A goal so simple, and yet it’s saddening how often people begin their fitness journey but give up on it mid-way. Been there? Of course, you have! We all have. But don’t blame yourself anymore. This time it’s going to be different.

Yes, we know that you’re busy. Yes, we understand the household pressure as well. But what we don’t understand, however, is you letting those factors become a roadblock on your journey to a healthy, better body. It doesn’t have to be that way. Read on to find out why it won’t.

Why Plans Crash

You not being able to join a fitness regime could be attributed to various factors:

  • Lack of a good gym nearby.
  • Unavailability of dedicated time for working out.
  • Unaffordable gym memberships and associated costs.
  • Lack of proper guidance at the gym.

There could be other reasons as well stopping you from achieving the body you desire. Truth be told, the fault lies in the very operating model of the fitness industry. While all gyms do a great job at making us sign up for their annual packages, very little is done to keep us going.

It is for these reasons that the effectiveness of gyms and other fitness programs is sometimes questioned. The solution? Remove fitness centres from the equation and keep the regime. Sounds impossible? Welcome to Mobiefit.

Fit at Home

The founders of Mobiefit realised the need for personalised and professional fitness training that can be availed without leaving the house. The result was the Mobiefit Body app.

Give that gym a miss and work out at home instead, like a Pro! (Rank Princess-SEO)

If you’re someone who has been working out at home, there’s no one better than you who knows how convenient and effective it is. If you can resist the temptation of turning on the TV or cuddling in your soft couch, working out at home could turn out to be the best thing for you.

Men and women are from different planets, they say. When it comes to their workout preferences, we can agree with that. While most men prefer pumping iron in the gymnasium, women would rather do yoga from the comfort of their homes. So whose fitness regime is better, you ask? Well, no one-size-fits-all, but each person stands to benefit from the experience of the other.

Recent surveys suggest most women no longer are in the pursuit of finding the motivation to drag themselves to the gym; most of them are now happy to work out at home instead. So what then has caused this shift in the pattern? Let’s find out:

Saves travel time

Modern women are multitaskers – they play multiple roles during the day – that of a wife, a mother, a homemaker and a working woman. She leads an extremely busy life and every minute of her time is very important for her.

Working out at home saves a tremendous amount of time for the quintessential modern woman. She doesn’t have to wade through mad traffic which is an unavoidable byproduct of modern cities nor travel long distances just to get to a far-off gym.

Working out at home can be fun too

Technology is evolving every single day. And so are the options for working out at home. There are a plethora of mobile applications, fitness DVDs and game consoles available today. Not only do they make working out interesting but they help you achieve desired results in a very cost-effective way.

Home workouts allow you to wear what you want to

Workout in your comfortable pyjamas, wear your geeky glasses or that drooping t-shirt, without any hesitation. You can wear what you want to, for nobody is judging you for what you’re wearing.

Also, save yourself from shopping for that dreaded spandex.

You can split your workout throughout your day

For women who have small children or a husband who need them all the time for tiny things, finding even thirty minutes of uninterrupted workout time can be quite a challenge.

Instead of not working out altogether, wouldn’t it be better if you work out for short periods of 10-15 minutes each?  Working out at home gives you the flexibility to do so.

It is easy to do a short uninterrupted meditation

It is a good practice to meditate for a while after every workout session. And we bet you can never do that at the gym. Workout from the comfort of your home and end your workout session with a short meditation.

Spend some time in your kitchen doing some thoughtful thinking

Eighty percent of our fitness is directly dependent on what we eat. We’d do much better if instead of thinking so much about our workout routine, we spent some quality time in our kitchen thinking and preparing a nutritious meal.

Who needs the StairMaster when you have the actual stairs?

Your home has the potential to give you a brilliant cardio workout. Run up and down the stairs, pull out that skipping rope, and dance as if no one is watching or do some yoga exercises – options are plenty.

Germ infected machines of the gym aren’t for you

Women, those of you who want to lose weight and aren’t keen on going to the gym, you’re on the right track. Machines at the gymnasium are used by a countless number of people every day and may be laden with germs. As if worrying about tedious workout routines wasn’t enough, you would have to worry about potential infections too. Workout at home instead and watch the fat melt away.

If you’re finding sticking to your workout regime and consistently going to the gym difficult, why not design a home-based workout routine that’s easier to follow and is enjoyable? Here’s to a healthier, stronger and energetic you!

Skin Care Du Jour: The Newest Trend In Skin Care

Microcurrent facials are one of the hottest skin care trends. Enhance your skin’s natural age-fighting abilities with this successful treatment.

What is a microcurrent facial?

The International Dermal Institute uses an electrical current at a very low voltage to fight ageing. The microcurrent stimulates cells to enhance the skin. The current triggers chemicals already found in the skin to make it look young.

Benefits of a microcurrent facial

A microcurrent facial has many advantages. It can even be used alternative medicine for restoring damaged skin! Some other benefits include:

  • Less wrinkles
  • Lifted eyebrows
  • Better muscle tone
  • Improved circulation

These benefits can appear wherever the microcurrent is applied. Not only on your face, but the same results can be seen on your neck as well!

Technology used in the microcurrent

The patent for the microcurrent facial device states that it can sometimes be used in conjunction with other techniques. Sometimes it is paired with photo rejuvenation technologies, which enhances the effect of the microcurrent.

The device that delivers the microcurrent uses electrodes to distribute the microcurrent evenly. This is done by placing the electrodes in a particular pattern on the skin. The patent also mentions that surface area is of vital importance in the microcurrent technology. The shape of the apparatus ensures that as much skin as possible receives the current.

Although you are applying a current to your face and neck, there is no risk associated with this treatment. The current is naturally occurring in your body and is only enhanced by the technology.

A scientifically backed treatment

A study published by the National Institute of Health found that applying a microcurrent increased the body’s production of various molecules. Specifically, there was an increase in amino acid and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. Both of these molecules are essential for cell repair and production.

Life Science Journal published an article which found that nearly half (over 48{ed162fdde9fdc472551df9f31f04601345edf7e4eff6ea93114402690d8fa616}) of women who were treated with a microcurrent showed the greatest improvement in wrinkle reduction on their forehead. 11{ed162fdde9fdc472551df9f31f04601345edf7e4eff6ea93114402690d8fa616} of women also saw growth near their nose and mouth.

Another form of microcurrent treatment

Another form of the microcurrent treatment is called ‘specific iontophoresis’. This treatment penetrates the skin at a deeper level. Although it uses the same process as a microcurrent facial, it lasts longer.

Advanced Clinical Aesthetics found that particular iontophoresis allows clients to target where the current goes through the body. This enables customers greater control over their skin and their appearance. Their study reports examples of various application settings. For overall coverage, high frequency and small waves should be used. If, on the other hand, you are looking for deeper skin penetration, use low frequency and larger waves.

The next trend?

Microcurrent facials undoubtedly have a huge impact. They decrease ageing and rejuvenate the skin. Best of all, they are scientifically proven to pose no risk! Many studies also show that this treatment is effective, so you can expect to see results!

Healthy Tips and Recipes

Our world is full of unhealthy drinks, snacks, and fast food. As a culinary student in Southern California, I learned some tricks to turn unhealthy favorites into yummy healthy alternatives. While there is a misconception that everything healthy is vegetarian, it isn’t true. Even a vegetarian diet can have harmful components. I will share some of my secrets that even your kids will love!

Replacing Rice

Rice is a big staple in the diet of a lot of different cultures. When trying to cut down on carbs and calories, there is a healthier alternative. This little secret will even get your kids to eat their vegetables without even knowing it. Use cauliflower rice to replace the rice. Cauliflower rice has a similar texture to rice and even looks like it. No one will know the difference. In my household, rice and beans are something we eat quite often for lunch. I switched to cauliflower rice, and my kids didn’t even notice. Try out this recipe the next time you have left over chicken.

  •    Teriyaki Chicken Bowl using Cauliflower Rice
  •    Chicken breast (2 cups shredded)
  •    Spinach (4 cups)
  •    Sugar snap peas (1 cup)
  •    Orange bell pepper (you can use red or yellow bell pepper)
  •    Yellow and red cherry tomatoes (1 cup)
  •    Teriyaki sauce
  •    EVOO (extra virgin olive oil)
  •    Cauliflower rice (2 cups)

Take your bell pepper and thinly slice it and set it aside until ready to sauté. Cut all your tomatoes in halves or quarters depending on your preference. Once you’ve chopped everything, lightly drizzle the EVOO into a pan on a medium high heat. Add all the vegetables and the pre-shredded chicken into the pan to sauté. Once all the contents are nice and hot, add about six tablespoons of teriyaki sauce.

While sautéing your chicken and vegetables, start heating you cauliflower rice in a separate pan.

Tip: You should always keep a food thermometer in the kitchen. A safe temperature for food to be served is between 145-170 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once it is all at a safe food temperature, place the cauliflower rice in a bowl and top with your teriyaki chicken and vegetable mixture. It is now ready to eat.

There are many different recipes with cauliflower rice. Talk about a cut in calories; cauliflower rice is only 25 calories per cup versus 199 calories per cup of white rice or 216 calories per cup of brown rice.

Say No to Sodas

While sodas are a huge market for drinks, they are extremely unhealthy and full of calories. There are 138 calories per can of Coca Cola, one of the leading brands of soft drinks. You don’t have to cut carbonated drinks out of your diet but try switching from sodas and try flavored carbonated water which has zero calories. If you have kids that don’t like to drink water, this is a great trick because it has all the ‘fizzle’ kids love but none of the calories and harmful ingredients that sodas have.

Carbonated water also satisfies thirst while soda makes you thirstier. You won’t have the sugar crash with carbonated water that you get from sodas either. In my opinion, there are also more flavor profiles to choose from with carbonated water than with soda.

Healthy Tips and Tricks

Here are some healthy tips and tricks to keep a healthy diet and lifestyle:

  •    To follow healthy eating, eat three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) with small snacks in between meals. Instead of reaching for a candy bar or cookies as a snack try having fresh fruits or nuts. Even a small portion of yoghurt and granola would be a great healthy snack.
  •    Fish holds a significant bit of Omega 3s (ALA, EPA and DHA). EPA and DHA can help with stiffness in joints. DHA is essential for neurological and visual development in infants. After much research, cultures that eat a diet that contains higher levels of Omega 3s have a decreased rate of depression and bipolar disorders. It doesn’t hurt to increase your intake of fish.
  •    Your brain can sometimes trick you to think you are hungry when you are thirsty and vice versa. Try drinking water when you start getting hungry between snacks and meals. But at the same time, you don’t want to drink way too much either. So try to drink in moderation. Eating in moderation is also a good thing to practice.
  •    Always try to make time for breakfast! Breakfast is the meal that is the most important. It gives you that energy boost to get your day going right. You will notice your ability to focus better as well as a boost to your metabolism. Remember that eating in moderation is important too. Eating breakfast in the morning will cause a chain reaction to not overeat during later meals and snacks.

While the list of healthy tips and tricks can go on and on, you don’t have to get overwhelmed. You have to find what fits you and your family best. Staying healthy can be easy if you put your mind to it and be creative. Positive thinking will also promote a healthier lifestyle. It is up to you to get out and exercise, eat healthily, and live healthily.

The Three Main Types of Design Documentation & their Differences

For a person from a non- digital design background, the various forms of design documentation such as Wireframe, Prototype and Mockup might mean the same. Many people use these words in an identical context. It is wrongly assumed that these words mean the same kind of sketch that is full of boxes, representing an innovative idea.

Wireframe, Prototype, and Mockup differ from each other, communicate different things, and they serve different purposes. They are the various forms of representing the final product.

Wireframe

The wireframe form of representing a design is less accurate than mockups and prototypes. It is a low fidelity representation of a product. It should answer the questions of what, where and how. This method depicts:

  • The broad content of the idea in groups
  • The structure of flow of information
  • A short description and a basic opinion of the user

Wireframes serve as the prominent backbone of your design, and they represent an important part of the final product. Wireframes should be conceived quickly. Its creation requires constant communication with the fellow team members. The creational process should not take long.

The most commonly used colours on a Wireframe are black, grey and, white, and blue for links. The use of icons and images can be simplified by substituting them with placeholders.

When created carefully, a Wireframe perfectly conveys the correct design.

The Usage of Wireframes

Wireframes are mostly used in the documentation of a given project. They should be accompanied by a written note explaining the interactions when needed and other technical documentations.

They can also be used in an informal atmosphere like communication within a team, as they are simple in form. They are not used as a testing material.

Prototype

A Prototype is a high accuracy representation of the product. It provokes user-interface interaction. When a user uses prototype, he should:

  • Be able to interact with the interface and experience content
  • Interact and test the representation in a way similar to the final product

A Prototype will not resemble the final product to the last detail, but it will have a significant percentage of similarities. The interactions are the most important part of Prototype, and they should be modelled with accuracy.

Prototype Usage

Prototype finds their maximum usage in user testing. This is an accurate method to check the usability of the interface before the development process begins.

Though the documentation with Prototype takes the effort to understand, it is the most impressive form of design documentation. It is also expensive and consumes time. It is adequate for simple projects.

Mockup

The Mockup is a middle path to a high accuracy design representation. Mockup, as the name suggests, is a visual draft of the webpage. It can also be an actual layout.

  A Mockup method of documentation:

  • Represents the flow of information
  • Helps gain vision into the content
  • Help demonstrate the functionalities
  • Projects the visual content of the project

The Usage of Mockup

Mockups are used for gathering feedback and when an early buy from a stakeholder is essential. They are high in accuracy, and they are quicker to create than the other forms.

The right method of design documentation can be chosen based on the problem at hand, the target group, and requirements of the product.

Contrasting Shades of Wireframe, Mockup & Prototype

A lot of individuals from non-IT backgrounds tend to confuse between wireframes, Mockups and prototypes for designing webpages. Most of them start to synonymise these terms. However, we are here to clarify these terms in a simplified manner.

We are here to narrate a step-by-step guide as to what these terms mean, how they help and what exactly is the difference between Mockup prototype and wireframe.

Wireframe:

As the name suggests, the term “WireFrame” is a schematic blueprint or a skeletal visual framework for a website. It forms the core foundation of the design that answers the following questions:

  1. What will be the main content bucket?
  2. Where will the information be displayed (The structure)?
  3. How will the interface interact with the user?

Wireframes are free of colours, logos, styles as the primary focus lies on content, functionality, and behaviour.

How does it help?

–    Forms the backbone of the design

–    Can be easily edited

–    Design Map can be reviewed

–    Focus is on available functions

Mockup

A Mockup is a precursor to a full-sized model of a design used to showcase the actual visual design. It’s the stage at which colours, logos, fonts and texts are added to the web-design, thus adding life to the webpage.

How does it help?

– Can be edited easily

– Good for stakeholder feedback

-Quick Creation

Mockups form a coloured map for the stakeholder to review them and give constructive feedback. They allow the web designers to make changes based on the comments in a fast manner thus making alterations easy.

Prototype

A prototype is a final representation that helps in simulating the interaction with the user interface. It is the end product that completes the map with colours, logos and functions. This plan helps the stakeholders understand how the webpage will “behave” with the actual user.

How does it help?

–  Facilitates interaction with the interface by experiencing content

– Allows Pre-launch testing

– Checks the “usability” quotient of the product

– Creates engagement for the viewer

Prototypes are quite expensive for designing communications and can also be quite time-consuming. Thus, it’s best to keep Prototypes for the final testing stage.

Now that you are aware of the terms, let’s analyse how they rank on various aspects:

Conclusion

It can further be concluded that the underlying structure design via wire-frame is the most price-friendly option followed by Mockup and then prototype. It is best to edit at the wire-frame level as it’s quite easy to make alterations at this level. It’s best not to spend too much time on designing wireframes as interaction level is the least at this stage.

By the aforementioned variations, the inferences drawn are as follows:

  1. A wireframe is a black and white blueprint of web-designs.
  2. The prototype is the final product that acts as a tester for users and interaction interface is best at this level (out of Wireframe, prototype and Mockup)
  3. The Mockup is a coloured map that is livelier than wire-frames, however making changes at this level isn’t as easy as for wireframes and isn’t as hard as that of prototypes.
