Olympics and Its Uniqueness in Today’s War-Torn World (Rank Princess – SEO)

Conflict and war continue to divide the international community. The Rio Olympics are a welcome light of unity in the darkness of our war-torn world.

As much as the Olympics is about sports, one cannot ignore its political aspect. From the Black Power Salute in 1968 to the Refugee Olympic Team in 2016, the Olympics are an important stage for political messages.

It Isn’t a Pretty Picture: Olympic Games Political Issues

A genocide claims millions in Darfur. Bullet pellets maim hundreds in the Kashmir valley. Tensions in South China have never been higher. And Afghanistan still dreams of returning to its erstwhile glory.

While Steven Pinker might rightly claim that our world has never been more peaceful, there is still a significant amount of violence going around.

In the wake of all the discord, the Rio Olympics has refreshingly managed to emphasise the importance of unity and peace. IOC President Thomas Bach reminded us, quite eloquently, of this fact in the magnificent opening ceremony.

The Five Rings

There have been many heart-warming instances of international unity at Rio this year, not the least among them a selfie between two Korean gymnasts.

The catch, of course, was that one of them (Lee Eun Ju) was from South Korea and the other (Hong Un Jong) from North Korea. The animosity between the two nations notwithstanding, this cheerful selfie showed the world that people from ‘rival’ nations could get along just fine.

A second instance belied what is arguably a bigger conflict. In the men’s 81kg (178 lbs) class judo, Khasan Khalmurzaev (Russia) hugged Travis Stevens (USA) after defeating him. Stevens called the Russians he trains with his ‘brothers’.

Americans are rightly proud of their prowess on the basketball court. But after winning a close match against Australia, the US head coach remarked, “Australia has played the best basketball in the Olympics”.

All these examples showcase that no matter what might be going in international politics when people come together for the love of sport, they can let go of their differences.

The Stateless and Uncertain

The modern refugee crisis is the biggest in the world, claimed to be bigger than that during the Second World War, and that’s saying something.

Millions upon millions of stateless refugees have been knocking on Europe’s doors for a while now. And in spite of Angela Merkel’s valiant efforts, the doors have largely remained shut.

For the first time in history, the Summer Olympics have hosted a Refugee Olympic Team (ROT). And yes, it’s great news.

Running for Respect: Social Importance of the Olympic Games

From Marine Le Pennin France to the louder Donald Trump in the US, right-wing nationalism has been on the rise. And with it, people have begun shunning the stateless millions.

But with the ROT participating, people are now beginning to respect the refugees.

Getting these people to Rio has highlighted their stories in ways that didn’t happen yet. Whether it be Yusra Mardini, Rami Anis, Yolande Mabika, or Popole Misenga, their stories of courage and perseverance are inspiring us all.

A Coming Together

There are athletes from every country of the world, and the refugees, who are living and training together in the Olympic Village. Their trainers, neighbours, and competitors are equally varied.

It is no surprise, therefore, that the pursuit of excellence in sports will allow us to forget if only for a few days, the pain and division in our war-torn world.

Olympics and Its Uniqueness in Today’s Troubled War-Torn World (Rank Princess – SEO)

Every four years, countries from across the globe come together to celebrate and test the limits of human endurance. They push for excellence by competing against the best in the world. However, in light of the current political and social context, the games seem to gain new significance. Read more to know about the impact of various wars across the world on the Olympic games.

The last two years has changed the Middle East and much of the western world along with it. The Syrian crisis has ripped West Asia into bits and pieces with the powers that be, circling over the carcass of a brilliant civilisation like vultures.

Adding to the conflict in the Middle East is the situation in the host country. Brazil has been ripped apart over the last couple of years with political instability, economic uncertainty as well as a scare over the Zika virus. All of this taken together has created a veritable war zone in the middle of which these Olympics are about to take place.

What is the significance of Rio 2016?

For one, we have an emerging economy hosting the games, a move from the usual developed and industrialised world. The Olympics have almost always resulted in staggering costs, with the first ever games overshooting its budget by around six times of what was originally planned. According to many estimates, the costs for Rio 2016 are likely to go overboard as well.

Contrast the cost of hosting the Olympics with the current political climate in that country. Their president was forced to resign recently, on charges of corruption. Add to this political uncertainty, the fact that their economy has been in recession for the past one year, whereas they had been enjoying unprecedented growth during the years in which it had submitted its official bid to host the Olympics.

The Significance of War

The condition in Syria has resulted in a steady influx of refugees from that region into Europe. Never before have so many people been rendered stateless, since the Second World War.

While the Olympics have always been about bringing out the best in athletes representing their respective nations and fierce national rivalry of the kind seen in Russia, China and the United States, this time, the inclusion of a team of refugees has gone against that trend.

These refugees represent no nation and are united by their common identity of having no state. However, their stories are inspiring.

The Story Of A Swimmer

One of them, Syrian Yusra Mardini swam for a mile through the cold sea as she guided a boat to the Greek coast, as she fled her country for her life. Having had to shuttle between refugee camps across Europe, she achieved her personal best in this year’s Olympics. That one minute that she was there in the pool led her to forget her identity as a refugee and let her get into the skin of a swimmer, as it should be.

Why is Rio 16 a good thing?

  • By including a team of refugees, it has managed to send a powerful message across the world, regarding people and nations ravaged by war.
  • It has managed to act as a soothing balm to a nation rattled by internal strife.
  • It reminds the world the value of excellence.
  • It exemplifies the power of a democratic emerging nation.

Rio 2016 hopes to ensure that the Games ring true to the spirit of a faster, higher, and stronger sporting world.

A Comparative Study Of Diesel vs. Petrol (Rank Princess – SEO)

Based on our analysis it is well established that diesel cars cost you less in the long run. Be it in Chennai where a litre of petrol will cost you 60 bucks or be it Mumbai where it is 65 bucks, diesel cars are the way to go. But if you are looking to get a car for 3-4 years then petrol is the ideal choice.

Let us take a look at the other aspects of diesel and petrol like its chemical composition, emission values, the performance of petrol variant against diesel variant and so on.

Chemical Composition

It is a well-known fact that diesel cars are more powerful and fuel efficient compared to petrol cars. But what is the reason behind this? Let’s find out.

Both petrol and diesel are derived from crude oil by a process called distillation. The hydrocarbon and carbon atom chains are removed in this process. Distillation takes place in a refinery. The gradual increase of temperature vaporises the unwanted atoms and the product left is petrol.

Petrol and diesel are hydrocarbons too. While petrol is comprised of 9 carbon atoms diesel is composed of 14 carbon atom chains. Petrol has traces of nitrogen and is more refined than diesel.

The 14 carbon chain composition of diesel makes diesel more powerful and fuel efficient than petrol. The energy per unit volume is more for diesel than petrol. This gives a better mileage in diesel variant cars.

Since diesel is composed of the longer carbon chain, there is more content of other atoms like sulfur and nitrogen in it. Petrol, on the other hand, is more uniform.

Pollutants Comparison

Both petrol and diesel, when burnt, produce pollution. Since petrol has less quantity of nitrogen and more of carbon, the byproduct of the combustion process is carbon mono oxide and NOx. The CO further reacts with O2 and gives carbon dioxide. This is what comes out of the exhaust tube in the cars. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and has a pernicious effect on the environment.

Diesel, on the other hand, produces a high amount of NOX and particulate matter rich in sulfur compounds. This causes major health risks.

Diesel emits 15{ed162fdde9fdc472551df9f31f04601345edf7e4eff6ea93114402690d8fa616} less carbon dioxide than petrol. But at the same time, it also produces four times more nitrogen-based pollutants and 22 times more sulfur particulate. These particulates are very harmful to the human heart, lungs, and the brain.

Climate Friendly?

As long as you burn fuel, there will be harmful emissions which will affect our health and cause problems for the environment as well. Since the major pollutant from petrol cars is CO2, petrol cars contribute majorly to global warming.

The main pollutant from diesel car is nitrogen and sulfur based compounds. Both these pollutants adversely affect humans. It causes respiratory problems. The sulfate compounds like sulfur dioxide cause acid rain which ruins the quality of buildings.

The reason why Taj Mahal has a yellowish plague is acid rain.

Technological Advancements In India, Europe, America, and Japan

Over the years many countries across Europe and even India have invested a considerable amount of money in R&D on how to reduce the pollution levels caused by diesel cars.

The amount of pollution caused by diesel vehicles 10 or 15 years ago was way more than the present numbers. While European diesel vehicles produce 10ppm, Indian diesel vehicles emit as much as 50ppm.

Of course, the European standards are higher than India.

Certainly, it is more difficult to control the pollution emissions from diesel variants than petrol variants. But one can debate that diesel does not cause global warming which is the hot environmental concern in our times.

Japan, on the other hand, has a different viewpoint on it. While Europe is making technological advancements in a diesel engine, Japan is developing highly efficient petrol engine.

They have been able to reduce the pollution emission from petrol variants effectively. The urban air pollution problem is greatly cut down with such innovations.

After the signing of Kyoto Protocol in 1997 most well off countries were obliged to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by an average of 8{ed162fdde9fdc472551df9f31f04601345edf7e4eff6ea93114402690d8fa616} over the span of 15 years. This was when America and Japan started researching into hybrid and electric cars. At this time European market had a different perspective.

The dominant car- makers in Germany like Volkswagen, BMW, and Daimler encouraged the consumption of diesel. According to these guys using diesel variant cars was a better and more effective way of reducing the carbon emission levels in the environment.

Britan, Germany, France, and Italy cajoled the car makers and the people to buy diesel.

Production of variant diesel engines shot up in Europe especially after the 1998 EC Acea agreement with all European car makers. And they decided to slash carbon emissions by as much as 25{ed162fdde9fdc472551df9f31f04601345edf7e4eff6ea93114402690d8fa616} over the course of 10 years.

Diesel rose to be the primary choice in the late 90s. The market share of diesel in the UK made a jump from under 10{ed162fdde9fdc472551df9f31f04601345edf7e4eff6ea93114402690d8fa616} in 1995 to over 50{ed162fdde9fdc472551df9f31f04601345edf7e4eff6ea93114402690d8fa616} in 2012. Today Britain has the largest number of diesel based cars in the world.

Interesting Fact About Diesel And Petrol

Did you know that the petrol car takes 10km to warm up on a chilly day, whereas the diesel car takes only 5 km to warm up on a cold day? This means that diesel variants produce less emission on a cold start than petrol. More reasons for why you should go for diesel based cars than petrol based.

Conclusion

It’s quite clear that diesel has proved to be a better fuel than petrol. It effectively improves the urban air quality. The lower carbon emission from diesel means reduced global warming and subsequently, reduced climate change as well.

In India, diesel is way cheaper than petrol, and in a span of 10 years you would have saved as much as Rs. 1,30,000 ( this is just a rough figure, the actual figure will depend on the kilometres run by the car).

Check out our previous post to find out how much money you would save if you get yourself a diesel car.

The Law of Karma (By Aakshey)

Every action/reaction causes a displacement in the cosmos.

The motion of the happening of a displacement initiates a series of displacements that total equal in magnitude and opposite in character.

So every action has its own series of reactions to match the displacement of that action with the displacement in an opposite manner.

Some of these reactions may be internal to the object, some may be external.

When there are other forces like friction that are in play, a part of the motion maybe be trapped as passive energy in the object or its associated environment.

In a vacuum,

Actions and reactions come in units of 4 each

Every action will have an internal reaction and an external one. And the external reaction (aka action) will have an associated internal action (aka reaction).

So for 2 objects in a vacuum, a single action is associated with 3 additional forms of energy/displacement.
