SandHI is the clever name IIT Kharagpur has given to its mega-project of reestablishing the heritage and antiquity of India’s heartland Varanasi through scientific research.

One of the most exciting parts of the project is the geo-exploration of Varanasi city. The present project is geared towards looking at the way geology or nature controlled the origin, evolution and survival of the city through ages.

Primarily funded by MHRD under the SandHI megaproject, funding for the Varanasi geo-quest project is by British Geological Survey (UK Aid).

Varanasi’s Facelift and What Lies Beneath

Varanasi (Banaras or Kashi), is seen as holy in many ancient religions of Southeast Asia like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism. 

Along with Alexandria, Luxor, Faiyum, Varanasi has the distinction of being one of the oldest cities of the world that has been continuously inhabited.

Varanasi today is being brought rapidly into the twenty-first century with investment in infrastructure.

Prof. Abhijit Mukherjee, Principal Investigator of the project, mentions that bringing ancient infrastructure into the structures needed for modern life is a challenge. The preservation of archaeological sites is a problem.

He also says that the city’s future will depend on the sustainable use of natural resources like groundwater, dealing with the possibility of flooding and a proper understanding of how the river works and how climate change will affect it.

We need to know the past and the present of the river and ground to predict the future.

Varanasi’s Civilisation through the Ages

The project is delineating the extent of growth phases of Varanasi civilisation through ages. It is exploring a number of routes:

  1. Exploring the evolution of the Ganga River, as this might have influenced the development and survival of Varanasi.
  2. A delineation on the quantity and quality of the river and groundwater and their interactions in and around the Varanasi area. This will help them understand the usable water resource and the renovation of the river Ganga.
  3. Understanding the weathering patterns and restoration of the ancient and historical monuments and Ghats of Varanasi
  4. Developing an urban geological framework of the future city of Varanasi.
  5. Excavating in several key locations including close to Kashi Viswanath Temple, to understand the historical foundation of Varanasi
  6. Urban mapping is being done to assist in the determination of archaeological sites and anthropological signatures. This may provide new insight into the North Indian civilisation evolution from Post-Harappa to modern periods.

So, What’s Been Happening?

The team has just completed drilling in about 100 locations up to a depth of 110 m below land surface, in and around the city of Varanasi.

They will then drill several deep boreholes to explore the deep earth control on the evolution of the Gangetic plain.

Detailed investigation of the river Ganga and groundwater resource and contamination studies are being carried out. Collaborating with Intel, the team is in the process of deploying several high-resolution chemical sensors to the River Ganges. This will allow for real-time water quality monitoring of the chemistry as well as the river pollution level.

New Century Tech Takes Us to the Past

Putting together all their research elements will help to build a 3D conceptual model and an underpinning database of the city and its environs. These can then be used to understand the location, evolution and future effect on the development of Varanasi and Ganga.

“Out of sight… out of mind, the role of the sub-surface in the urban footprint is often overlooked and rarely, if ever, makes an appearance in the long-term planning of the world’s cities,” says Dr. Martin Smith, Director-Global Science, British Geological Survey and collaborating scientist. 

An important thing the team emphasises is that the ground beneath our cities not only holds its history; it is a potential resource with groundwater aquifers and space for storage and transport.

“However, it can also be a hazard regarding stability and dispersal of contaminants” points out Prof. Probal Sengupta of IIT Kharagpur, Joint Investigator of the project, talking about the very ground we stand on.

The Five Rings

There have been many heart-warming instances of international unity at Rio this year, not the least among them a selfie between two Korean gymnasts.

The catch, of course, was that one of them (Lee Eun Ju) was from South Korea and the other (Hong Un Jong) from North Korea. The animosity between the two nations notwithstanding, this cheerful selfie showed the world that people from ‘rival’ nations could get along just fine.

A second instance belied what is arguably a bigger conflict. In the men’s 81kg (178 lbs) class judo, Khasan Khalmurzaev (Russia) hugged Travis Stevens (USA) after defeating him. Stevens called the Russians he trains with his ‘brothers’.

Americans are rightly proud of their prowess on the basketball court. But after winning a close match against Australia, the US head coach remarked, “Australia has played the best basketball in the Olympics”.

All these examples showcase that no matter what might be going in international politics when people come together for the love of sport, they can let go of their differences.

The Stateless and Uncertain

The modern refugee crisis is the biggest in the world, claimed to be bigger than that during the Second World War, and that’s saying something.

A Comparative Study Of Diesel vs. Petrol (Rank Princess – SEO)

Based on our analysis it is well established that diesel cars cost you less in the long run. Chemical Composition

It is a well-known fact that diesel cars are more powerful and fuel efficient compared to petrol cars. But what is the reason behind this? Let’s find out.

Both petrol and diesel are derived from crude oil by a process called distillation. The hydrocarbon and carbon atom chains are removed in this process. Distillation takes place in a refinery. The gradual increase of temperature vaporises the unwanted atoms and the product left is petrol.

Petrol and diesel are hydrocarbons too. While petrol is comprised of 9 carbon atoms diesel is composed of 14 carbon atom chains. Petrol has traces of nitrogen and is more refined than diesel.

The 14 carbon chain composition of diesel makes diesel more powerful and fuel efficient than petrol. The energy per unit volume is more for diesel than petrol. This gives a better mileage in diesel variant cars. 

Since diesel is composed of the longer carbon chain, there is more content of other atoms like sulfur and nitrogen in it. Petrol, on the other hand, is more uniform.

Pollutants Comparison

Both petrol and diesel, when burnt, produce pollution. Since petrol has less quantity of nitrogen and more of carbon, the byproduct of the combustion process is carbon mono oxide and NOx. The CO further reacts with O2 and gives carbon dioxide. This is what comes out of the exhaust tube in the cars. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and has a pernicious effect on the environment. 

Diesel, on the other hand, produces a high amount of NOX and particulate matter rich in sulfur compounds. This causes major health risks.

Diesel emits 15{ed162fdde9fdc472551df9f31f04601345edf7e4eff6ea93114402690d8fa616} less carbon dioxide than petrol. But at the same time, it also produces four times more nitrogen-based pollutants and 22 times more sulfur particulate. These particulates are very harmful to the human heart, lungs, and the brain.

As long as you burn fuel, there will be harmful emissions which will affect our health and cause problems for the environment as well. Since the major pollutant from petrol cars is CO2, petrol cars contribute majorly to global warming.

Markelle Fultz – the perfect fit

He is the perfect fit in this season’s draft for the Philadelphia 76ers. Fultz will fit in well when the Sixers attack and will compliment their defence too.

He is on top in almost every aspect of the game and will be the player the Sixers will be hoping to land.

Dennis Smith – could provide offensive depth to Sixer’s roster

The next best point guard after Markelle Fultz in the upcoming NBA draft, Dennis Smith could provide the much-needed depth to the Sixer’s attack.

He can set up assists as well as be a good scorer himself, which could add up to him being the perfect fit for Ben Simmons, besides Markelle Fultz that is. If these two can find their rhythm the 76er’s offence could pack too much of a punch for many teams to handle.

Harry Giles – a pick for talent alone

With the possibility that the Philadelphia 76ers could lose Jahlil Okafor or Nerlens Noel, Harry Giles could be a good draft pick even though he might not be the perfect fit for the team.

Standing at 6 feet 11 inches tall, Giles could be picked for his talent alone, be it defence or offence.

Jayson Tatum – a forward the Sixers have been hoping for

Offensively he is an option that the 76ers have been hoping for. He shoots well from mid-range and is a good forward while working in isolation scenarios.

He will be a good fit to work with Ben Simmons to take the Sixer’s attack to the next level.

Josh Jackson – a good mix of offence and defence

With the start of the college basketball season and the Sixers hopeful of two of the top 10 draft picks this year, the scouts will be watching this NCAA season closely.

The 76ers will be trying to add to their roster young and promising players to shape up to the vision of head coach Brett Brown, in keeping with the restructuring the team underwent last year.
